Understanding Microneedling and Its Benefits
Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, has gained popularity for its effectiveness in treating a range of skin concerns. Here is how it works and which concerns it addresses.
Microneedling, also called collagen induction therapy, uses fine needles to create tiny punctures in the top layer of skin. Those controlled micro-injuries trigger the body's natural wound-healing process, resulting in cellular turnover and increased collagen and elastin production. It treats lines, scars, pigmentation, pore size, and texture with short downtime.
What Is Microneedling?
Microneedling is performed with a device containing numerous tiny, sterile needles. These needles puncture the skin, creating controlled micro-injuries that stimulate the body's ability to heal itself, which includes producing collagen and elastin, the two proteins that maintain skin elasticity and firmness.
Benefits of Microneedling
1. Reduces the Appearance of Lines and Wrinkles
Microneedling helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles by boosting collagen production, which gives the skin its plump appearance.
2. Improves Scars
Microneedling improves the appearance of atrophic, or depressed, acne scars by promoting the synthesis of new skin cells. Read our acne scar treatment page for detail on which scar types respond best.
3. Reduces Hyperpigmentation and Evens Skin Tone
The treatment can reduce hyperpigmentation and sun spots by shedding the top layer of skin and supporting normal melanocyte function, enhancing texture and complexion. Our hyperpigmentation page explains why pigment depth matters here.
4. Minimizes Pore Size
Microneedling can minimize pores by increasing collagen production in and around them, which causes them to plump and appear smaller.
5. Improves Skin Texture and Reduces Stretch Marks
It improves skin texture and reduces the appearance of stretch marks by breaking down scar tissue and inducing skin remodeling.
6. Enhances Product Absorption
By creating micro-channels in the skin, microneedling enhances the absorption of active ingredients in skincare products, making them more effective.
How Does Microneedling Work?
The procedure typically starts with the application of a numbing cream to the treatment area to minimize discomfort. The device is then moved over the skin to create tiny channels, with depth adjusted by the practitioner depending on the treatment area and desired effect.
Immediately afterward the skin may appear red and slightly swollen, similar to mild sunburn. These effects generally subside within one to three days, and the skin begins to heal. As new collagen forms, the skin becomes more elastic and thicker.
Who Should Consider Microneedling?
Microneedling is appropriate for all skin types, including sensitive skin, and across the full range of skin tones. It suits individuals looking to reduce signs of aging, improve texture, or reduce the appearance of scars or stretch marks.
People with certain skin conditions such as psoriasis or eczema in the treatment area, active acne, a history of keloid scarring, or recent isotretinoin use should consult with a professional first. Pregnancy and active cold sores also mean postponing treatment.
The RF Microneedling Upgrade
At Chandra Wellness Center we use EXION RF microneedling, which delivers radiofrequency energy through the needles at a set depth. That produces a considerably stronger collagen response than needling alone, which matters for acne scars and skin laxity. Read more on our RF microneedling with Exion page.
